RE: New to site

By "beater" I didn't mean something with lots of problems. I meant get something that's been around for a while so you don't feel bad about dumping it. You definately want to make sure it's mechanically sound.

RE: New to site

I am brand new to biking (and this site) having just passed the Riders Edge class last weekend. I am totally confused as what bike to buy for my first one. On one hand I would love a Dyna but am a bit worried its a bit much for someone who has only ridden in a parking lot at 15 MPH and has 20 miles under his belt. Your thoughts are much appreciated. Ride On Steve I give everyone the same advice. Buy a smallish beater bike and ride it for a while until you are comfortable. Once you are happy, then you can sell the bike and get what you really want. Most of the time, you can pick up something cheap, ride it for a few months, then sell it for what you paid for it. I have a Dyna Street Bob. It's a great bike and hasn't given me any trouble, but I have ten years' riding experience. The second part of my advice is to tell people to take a safety course. You already did that and are ahead of the curve. The question you need to ask yourself now is how well did you handle that little Buell Blast? If you had many issues with it, then that is enough to tell you not to jump on a big twin yet.

RE: My Yamaha shop Devoured

Most of the shops around here charge ridiculous prices. You pretty much have to ask them for a discount or tell them you'll buy it off the internet, and they'll usually drop the price to something a little more decent.

RE: Buell Blast 500 cc ??

I can't give you first-hand experience, but I was really interested in these when they first came out and always talked to the owners. I've never met an owner that was unhappy with the bike. You'll hear lots of hate from people who just don't understand the need for a bike like that, but that's the case for all bikes.

RE: Since I don't have an American V-Twin

A local bar here sponsored a bike night and had free beer for anyone riding a motorcycle. I never did understand that.

RE: 2009 Victorys

I have a friend who rides a Victory. He loves it. I like it too. It looks cool, sounds cool, and he spent a lot less than me. As for imitators, everyone at sometime or another follows the trend. From what I can tell the Japanese bikes imitated Harley's look, and only their look. They took harley tech and improved on it. A friend who has been riding the same Lowrider for over 15 years said years ago that he wished Harley would offset the cylinders for better cooling. Greenman is right, and I don't think Harley has had an original idea since 1903. If they have, they have kept it a secret. I have a challenge for everyone, Name one technical innovation to the motorcycling world Harley has introduced in the last 50 years, other than the Softail. Buell has come out with some neat ideas lately like fuel in the frame. But most don't count Buell as HD.

There's no point.

RE: 2009 Victorys

ok...why the V-twin development by Victory..and the Japs for their cruiser designs ??? ...if they wanted to be different they could do opposing cylinders ( BMW)....or flat V-4 ( Goldwing ) or some other formation.... ..but no....they want to emulate the Harley...so they go with the V-twin...... !!!! ..like wise....I'm sure Harley could develop any engine they wanted....but they are sticking to a tried and true formula...the Harley V-twin....pushrod driven....and that's 'jes the way we like it. so you are saying that just cuz HD uses a v-twin that no other company can use it without coping HD?.:h well then i believe HD copied the v-twin from someone else so that makes them a copier too right? and by that reasoning since HD has 2 wheels no other bike can use 2 wheels?? wow....talk about being brainwashed.:S Harley didn't invent the V-Twin. That makes them a copycat, I guess. I better sell mine. Who invented the V-8 car engine? I need to know if I should avoid Ford or Chevy since one is obviously copying the other. It's sad that a thread about the new Victory motorcycles has turned into yet another "Harley -vs- the world" threads.

RE: 2009 Victorys

...y'know...dis Harley vs. other bikes is really quite simple. You can't confuse a crotch rocket with a Harley....they are definitely a different kind of bike. You can't confuse a BMW with a Harley....they are definitely in a niche of their own.... You can't confuse a Triumph with a Harley......etc... But it stops there... The Victory's, Suzuki's, Yamaha's, Honda's "Cruiser" bikes are all Harley clones...built to emanate the Harley. A feeble attempt to cash in on the popularity of the H-D....is there any doubt on this ???? I don't think they are clones. There's really only so much you can do with a frame, seat, bars, fenders, and gas tank. All are going to be similar in one way or another. You can't really look at the new crop of Japanese bikes and say they look much like Harleys at all. Most are going for a more futuristic look.

RE: Sons of Anarchy

I read the book "Out in Bad Standing." It wasn't too bad.

RE: 2009 Victorys

I just checked the price of the Victory motorcycles. They all cost more than my Street Bob. Anyone that thinks Victory motorcycles are somehow cheaper than Harleys are mistaken. For that matter, the Japanese big twins are getting up there in price.

RE: 2009 Victorys

No matter how I try, I can't get into any of the Victory bikes. They look better than the latest Buell, though.

RE: Dumb and Dumber

I have to double tie my Left shoe, because my lace is long enough to get hooked on the shifter peg. I have almost went down a couple of times. That has got to be the most nerve wracking feeling ever. That's why I wear riding boots that don't have laces. Before I got smart and bought the boots, my laces got caught a few times. I had forgotten until you mentioned it.

RE: Ridley mc

I like the looks of the Ridley but hate the idea of an automatic. There are a few riding around town, but I've never caught up to the owner to see what they think. Next time I see one, I'll do my best to get a review from a first hand owner.

RE: rainex on visors

I just rode 60 miles in a downpour. This was with no fairing and no windshield; only a visor. The rain didn't give me one bit of trouble, I'd just occasionally wipe it off with my gloves.

RE: First Motorcycle

For a first motorcycle, and a cruiser type, I say don't go larger than a 750. It'll be big enough to get you around but won't have too much power to get you in trouble while learning. Better yet, take the safety course. You get to ride one of their tiny little 250's or 500's. That'll give you an idea how well you can control one of those bikes and might stop you from making a mistake and buying the biggest baddest bike you can find.

RE: Dumb and Dumber

Well, the rubber is there to give you a grip on the peg. I had a friend who put solid chrome pegs on his bike, and they were nearly impossible to keep my feet on. The wind always pushed them off. When I was younger and wearing wide leg carpenter jeans, I'd occasionally get the leg of my pants caught on a peg. I was always able to get it loose before dropping the bike though.

RE: Daddy, I want a motorcycle

well at least she is taking a safety course. but there is no way i'd let her get a harley for her first bike. she can take a great course from the local abate chapter for a fraction of the cost. the harley course is a way to rope those with that gleem in their eyes into a bike that they are not ready for. you should encourage her to start small, something like a honda 250 rebel. They probably offer discounts on Buells, too, so a Blast might be an option. I started on a 250 Rebel. Great starter bike.
